Innovhub for Sustainability

Innovhub sustainability services: Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), consultancy for sustainable products and processes, and technical support for compliance with the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

Assess and reduce the environmental impact of products through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

A rigorous and internationally recognized tool for measuring and improving environmental performance.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies provide a scientific methodology for systematically evaluating the environmental impacts associated with a product, process, or service throughout its entire life cycle.

From raw material sourcing and production to use and end-of-life management, LCA delivers a comprehensive and objective assessment in accordance with the international standards ISO 14040 and ISO 14044.

An LCA study consists of four integrated phases:
Defining the goal and scope, including objectives, system boundaries and functional unit.
Conducting the Life Cycle Inventory (LCI), by collecting and quantifying material, energy and emission flows associated with the system under study.
Assessing environmental impacts by translating data into indicators related to climate change, resource use, acidification, eutrophication and other impact categories.
Interpreting the results to identify improvement opportunities and support decision-making.

An LCA study can help companies:

  • Identify the life cycle stages with the highest environmental impacts.
  • Detect opportunities to reduce resource consumption, emissions and waste.
  • Support strategic decisions based on scientific evidence.
  • Communicate environmental performance in a transparent and verifiable manner.
  • Contribute to certification processes and the development of reliable environmental declarations.

Technical Consultancy on the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)

Regulatory, analytical and scientific support for understanding and implementing the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation

Regulation (EU) 2025/40 on Packaging and Packaging Waste (PPWR), published on 22 January 2025, establishes a harmonised and legally binding framework across the European Union.

Its main objective is to promote the circular economy and reduce environmental impacts through three key principles: reducing packaging, encouraging reuse and ensuring recyclability.

The Regulation is based on seven sustainability requirements that guide the design, manufacture and management of packaging.

Support services for PPWR compliance

Innovhub provides technical expertise to address the main obligations established by Regulation (EU) 2025/40.

Restriction of hazardous substances

  • Assessing material composition, including the presence of heavy metals and PFAS.

  • Supporting the update of supplier specifications and control plans.

Recyclability requirements

  • Assessing and certifying packaging recyclability.

  • Analysing technical requirements, identifying non-compliance issues and supporting the redesign of critical packaging solutions.

  • Verifying compliance with minimum recycled content requirements for plastic packaging.

Compostability requirements

  • Assessing and certifying compostability.

  • Identifying packaging subject to compostability requirements and supporting material selection.

  • Monitoring regulatory developments concerning bioplastics.

Ecodesign and packaging minimisation

  • Applying ecodesign principles to optimise packaging weight and volume.

  • Verifying compliance with requirements such as the maximum 50% empty space threshold.

  • Supporting the elimination of unnecessary packaging components.

Declaration of conformity and technical documentation

  • Preparing the EU Declaration of Conformity and the technical documentation required under the Regulation.

Complementary services

The service can be integrated with:

  • Activities related to food contact materials (FCM), in compliance with Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004.

  • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies according to ISO 14040-44 to support product development and design decisions.
